Not always completely out of context, but many times missing the larger picture.<\/p>\n<p>While dopamine is involved in us getting rewarded and excited by things, it also plays an important role in us\u00a0<strong>not getting over-rewarded<\/strong>, or feeling rewarded or stimulated by things that are not necessarily serving us for the better.<\/p>\n<p>The ways that this is studied in clinical trials, interestingly, is by creating a Tyrosine and Phenylalanine deficiency in patients or animal models and then applying the stimulus or variable that they are wishing to test. Some fascinating results of studies like this have been\u00a0<strong>quicker reaction time\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0less inclination towards smoking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Another fascinating aspect of L-Tyrosine is that it is a crucial component in the production of\u00a0<strong>melanin<\/strong>. \u00ab\u00a0<em>The critical step in melanin biogenesis is the oxidation of tyrosine by the enzyme tyrosinase<\/em>.\u00a0\u00bb Riley, P. (1997).<\/p>\n<p>This means that Tyrosine in a sense is a\u00a0<strong>light-absorbing<\/strong>\u00a0amino acid, and\u00a0<strong>helps us produce pigment for our hair and skin<\/strong>. It&rsquo;s important to note as well, that our exposure to natural light also helps promote the conversion of tyrosine into dopamine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It may seem that Tyrosine is the main goal &#8211; but here&rsquo;s why consuming Phenylalanine is still beneficial and important:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While Tyrosine can be synthesized in the human body, it is created by converting Phenylalanine, which cannot be synthesized and must come from the diet.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, we can deduce the importance of consuming Phenylalanine but also understand the importance of Tyrosine itself. Consuming both amino acids allows the body to have some supply of Tyrosine, but also to have a reserve of its building block in the case it should need to convert more.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, a study by Wang, H. L. (1962) called \u00ab\u00a0<strong>Effect of dietary phenylalanine and tryptophan on brain serotonin<\/strong><em>\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<\/em>showed that not dietary Tyrosine, but Phenylalanine consumption was able to lower body and brain serotonin. If you have studied or are a fan of the work of Dr. Ray Peat, and his extensive explanations on serotonin and its harmful effects in excess, then you will appreciate the value in that.<\/p>\n<p>As Fernstrom, J.
